New Dining Hall Transforms School Mealtimes

The academy's existing dining hall could only seat 180 pupils at once, creating significant overcrowding during lunch periods and forcing multiple sittings that disrupted the school day. The outdated facilities lacked proper ventilation and modern catering equipment, whilst the cramped conditions were affecting pupil wellbeing and social interaction. With pupil numbers continuing to rise and limited space for traditional construction, the school needed a solution that could be delivered quickly during the summer holidays without disrupting the new term.

Vector Space Modular designed and manufactured a contemporary 520 square metre dining hall featuring floor-to-ceiling windows, modern LED lighting, and acoustic panels to create a pleasant dining environment. The modular design included a full commercial kitchen, servery area, and dining space for 350 pupils, complete with underfloor heating and advanced ventilation systems. The building was manufactured off-site during term time and installed during the six-week summer break, ensuring minimal disruption to school operations.

The new dining hall eliminated overcrowding by increasing seating capacity by 94%, reducing lunch queues from 25 minutes to just 8 minutes and allowing more time for pupils to socialise and relax. Staff reported improved pupil behaviour and satisfaction scores, whilst the modern kitchen facilities enabled the catering team to increase fresh food preparation by 40%. The project was completed on time and £75,000 under budget, with the school reopening on schedule for the new academic year.
